Found out my employer didn't even have coverage

You could have knocked me over with a feather today when I got a letter saying the workers comp board can't process my claim because apparently the small construction company I've been with for two years doesn't have active insurance. Like, I'm sitting here with a broken ankle from when that scaffolding gave way, staring at this letter, and just completely dumbfounded. I knew they were a little disorganized, checks were sometimes late, equipment old, but I never in a million years thought they'd be skipping out on something as basic as insurance. Now I have no idea where I stand with my medical bills or if I'm ever gonna see any lost wage replacement, and the owner isn't returning my calls which feels pretty telling honestly. I've been scouring https://www.workerscompensationattorneylaw.com/ trying to figure out what happens in this situation because the site has a whole section about uninsured employers and the Uninsured Employers Fund, but the legal language is pretty dense and I'm not totally clear if that fund actually pays you or just investigates the company. Has anyone here dealt with an uninsured employer situation in New York? How long did it take to get anything sorted out, and did you ever end up seeing any money?
